How to Make Choices That Move You Forward
Every choice you make is a step toward your future – March 13, 2025 Edition
Dear readers
Every choice you make is a step toward your future. Some decisions feel small—hitting snooze, choosing what to eat, how you spend an hour—but over time, they shape the course of your life. The difference between those who move forward and those who stay stuck isn’t luck—it’s intentional decision-making.
Here’s how to make choices that move you forward.
I – Insight: Small Choices, Big Impact
"We are our choices." — Jean-Paul Sartre
Most people think life is shaped by big, life-altering moments, but small, everyday decisions define your future. The habits you build, the people you surround yourself with, and the actions you take daily create a compounding effect that determines your success.
Think of your decisions like drops of water filling a jar. One drop might not seem like much, but the jar fills up over time. Your life is the sum of all those drops—the small, consistent choices you make daily.
Don't look for a major turning point if you're not where you want to be. Instead, ask yourself: What small decisions do I make daily that shape my future?
W – Ways to Apply: Two Strategies for Better Decision-Making
1. Follow the “Future You” Rule
"Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most." — Abraham Lincoln
Before making a choice, pause and ask:
- Will this decision bring me closer to the future I want, or will it keep me stuck?
- Would my future self-thank me for this choice?
Visualizing your future self helps you make better long-term decisions rather than just chasing short-term comfort.
2. Use the “No Regret” Test
"In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take." — Lewis Carroll
Imagine yourself a year from now, looking back on this moment. Will you regret not taking action? If the answer is yes, then take the step now. Growth doesn't come from waiting but from making intentional moves forward.
P – Provocation: A Question to Challenge You
What is one decision you’ve been avoiding that could change your future? What small step can you take today to move forward?
